Mariculture is specialised branch of aquaculture involving the artificial cultivation of marine organisms in the sea or in brackish water, especially fish and shellfish in special pens or ponds, or on ropes, poles of cages. Mariculture is a significant segment of the strategic development of the Primorje and Gorski kotar County, with a long tradition and pioneer role in the Mediterranean. Mariculture, or the cultivation of sea organisms, is ecologically acceptable, economically viable and socially welcome activity, under the condition that it is expertly planned and managed. The physical plan of the Primorje and Gorski kotar County includes the development of mariculture locations and their maximum surface, capacity and organism types.
